However, Sproat (5.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) fails the pitching gate for a strong lean, and Thornton's minuscule sample (17.1 IP) makes it impossible to properly evaluate his upside. MIL hits significantly worse vs LHP (.239/.689 vs .259/.755 vs RHP), which is the opposing starter's handedness. The -149 price is negative value territory. MIL is likely to win but the price combined with the pitching concerns and handedness split make this a pass.

Framber Valdez (4.10 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) is a clear upgrade over David Peterson (6.45 ERA, 1.64 WHIP), who has been one of the worse starters in the league this season. The Cubs lineup hits well vs LHP (.260/.779 in that split), which is a concern, but Peterson's ERA and WHIP make him a liability regardless. Detroit is hot (7-3 in L10, W1 streak, 4.7 R/G L5). The -105 line offers slight positive value on the Tigers. This is a moderate lean — Peterson's struggles are significant but Valdez isn't dominant either.

Both starters have struggled significantly — Schultz with a 5.60 ERA and Rocker with a 4.40 ERA and a poor 2-8 record. Neither team provides a pitching edge worth backing. The White Sox are the slightly better team (53-46 vs 50-50) and have better recent form, but the TEX lineup hits better vs LHP (Schultz's handedness). With poor starters on both sides and comparable teams at even pricing, this is a pass.

This game features two flawed pitchers and two mediocre teams with comparable records. Imai's 6.06 ERA and 1.50 WHIP are poor, and Miami's Phillips (3.48 ERA) holds the pitching edge — but Phillips' 1.39 WHIP and modest K rate (56 in 75 IP) limit the edge. Miami is on a brutal 7-game losing streak and scoring just 3.4 R/G in L5. Houston has Yordan Alvarez (monstrous form — .382 L14, 33 HR) anchoring a lineup that has scored 5.0 R/G in L5. The competing factors nearly cancel out, making this a pass despite Houston's Alvarez edge.

The Nationals have the better team and offense (6.7 R/G in L5 is blistering) against a terrible Lorenzen (6.22 ERA, 1.77 WHIP). However, Palmquist is returning from limited service (9.2 IP, 6.52 ERA) — a massive unknown at Coors Field. The Coors inflation effect is excluded per instructions, but Palmquist's tiny sample and high ERA make the pitching gate impossible to clear. Washington's offense is dynamic (Wood, Abrams, Mead all hot) but backing a -136 price with a nearly untested starter is too risky without pitching confidence.

Walbert Ureña (2.88 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 81.1 IP) holds the pitching edge over Liberatore (5.00 ERA, 1.48 WHIP), but the Angels are the worse team (.396 vs .515) with a worse overall offense. The Cardinals' offense vs RHP (.238/.700) is modest, but the Angels' offense vs LHP (.238/.712) is similarly uninspiring. STL is at +100 even money, which is slight positive value for a team with the better record. The Cardinals are cold (L3 streak, 3.7 R/G L5) and Liberatore is a liability, but the price and opponent quality make this a very marginal lean. Given Ureña's ERA edge, this narrowly tips to a pass — however, the +100 value on the better team in a close matchup provides just enough edge for a lean.

Arizona's starter Kohl Drake has no available stats — zero ERA, WHIP, or IP data — making it impossible to evaluate the home pitching side at all. Jack Perkins has a brutal 6.87 ERA over 57.2 IP, so the Athletics provide no pitching confidence either. Both sides fail the pitching evaluation criteria. AZ is the slightly better team and has better recent form, but the complete absence of data on Drake and the terrible Perkins numbers make this an automatic pass.

Chase Burns (2.54 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 118 K in 102.2 IP, 11-1 record) is the best pitcher on the mound in this game by a wide margin over Castillo (4.93 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 3-8). Burns provides a dominant pitching edge. Seattle's offense is weak (.688 OPS, 4.06 R/G) and they've gone cold recently (3.8 R/G L5, multiple cold bats). The +129 line on Cincinnati is attractive positive value for a team with the elite starter. The Reds' offense vs RHP (.226/.690) is a concern, but Burns' gap over Castillo is so wide that this is a clear lean.

On the merits, Pittsburgh actually has a superior offense right now (.768 OPS, 5.33 R/G, 6.3 R/G in L5) and has been hot recently (6-4 L10). However, Warren (4.03 ERA) is slightly better than Chandler (4.77 ERA, 3-8 record). The Yankees have the better team ERA (3.42) and record (56-44).
